Located in Allison Woods, River Trail Nature Center in Northbrook has been open since 1958. The floodplain forest, backwater wetlands, oak-hickory woodland, and an ancient remnant of sugar maple-basswood forest make River Trail a haven for a variety of birds, insects, plants, and wildlife. The Nature Center boasts free exhibits and onsite nature educators help teach the story of the plants, animals, and natural landscapes formed by the Des Plaines River.
Situated alongside the Des Plaines Trail System, the River Trail Nature Center has 1.7 miles of its own unpaved walking trails. The River Trail Nature Center is also home to a number of adopted animals who serve as animal ambassadors to educate visitors of all ages. All animals living at River Trail Nature Center are non-releasable and cannot successfully live in the wild, often due to injury or other extenuating circumstances.
Visitors are invited to learn how to make maple syrup, meet an owl or join a guided hike at all-ages events each week—or just climb and create in the indoor and outdoor play areas.
We hope to see you soon!
